Manipur celebrates 'Patriots Day'

Manipur today celebrated 'Patriots Day' to commemorate the 1891 Anglo-Manipuri war during which scores of people sacrificed their lives to safeguard the independence of the state.
Several functions were held in the state capital where Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh, his Cabinet colleagues and senior officials placed wreaths to pay respects to those killed in the war.
Governor Ashwini Kumar, Speaker Th Lokeshore, Chief Minister Ibobi Singh and Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam in their separate messages on the occasion called upon the people to work unitedly for the development of Manipur and asked them to fight against those who stand against the integrity of the country.
Official reports from districts said 'Patriots Day' was also celebrated at all district headquarters and speakers in the functions recalled how bravely Thangal General and Bir Tikendrajit faced the gallows when they were hanged by the British at Imphal pologround.
