In another incident of attack on a person from the northeast in the national capital, a 22-year-old Manipuri youth was allegedly stabbed and robbed by some assailants in Mehrauli area here in the wee hours today.
Police apprehended four juveniles in this connection and the mobile phone which they had robbed from the victim has been recovered.
Police maintained that it was a case of robbery and the attack was not racially motivated.
The incident took place around 4 am when the youth identified as Khupgensian was returning to his Paryavaran Complex home after attending prayers at a nearby church. A group of men waylaid him and then tried to snatch his mobile phone. When Khupgensian resisted, they stabbed him and fled with his mobile phone and wallet.
Even after being injured, Khupgensian managed to reach his C-77 flat where the building's guard Prem found him bleeding and called his room partner. His room partner along with some other persons took him to Saket City hospital in an unconscious state. Hospital authorities then informed the police.
Khupgensian underwent an abdominal surgery and his condition is said to be stable, police said.
Later in the day, the hospital released a statement saying that he was brought to the hospital in a state of shock at 4 am with stab wounds in lower chest and abdomen. He was stabilised and taken up for emergency abdominal surgery which was performed successfully.
"His vital parameters are being maintained and the patient continues to be under intensive care monitoring," the statement said.
The youth hails from T. Khajang village of Churachandpur district of Manipur. He has been staying in Delhi for the past four years at a rented accommodation with a friend. He works with an NGO in west Delhi's Dwarka area.
A case has been registered under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery) and 397 (robbery) of the Indian Penal Code.
The incident comes two days after two youths from Manipur were allegedly beaten with sticks in Ambedkar Nagar area of south Delhi on Sunday night.
A youth from Arunachal Pradesh recently died after he was allegedly assaulted by some shopkeepers in Lajpat Nagar area. A 14-year-old Manipuri girl was raped in south Delhi's Munirka area last week.
