Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister R C Laloo today handed over the state and district awards to 44 school teachers recognising their contribution to the field of education.
Eleven teachers were given the state award while 33 bagged the district awards.
Earlier in the day, Laloo, who is also the education minister emphasised on the need to introspect on the ways and means to promote and improve the quality of education and its system in the state.
He was addressing the state function at the U Soso Tham Auditorium here.
Calling for a concerted effort involving all, Laloo said, "What is the role of the citizens, parents, teachers, students to uplift education in the state. Let us introspect! collectively and judiciously! What the state can do or cannot do... "
Informing that a report on the study on the provincialisation of schools has been submitted to the government, Laloo said, "A higher level committee has to examine the paper before making any recommendations."
He said as part of the government's policy to make education accessible in rural areas, a total of 20 rural hostels would be set up.
This was under a special scheme under the Asian Development Bank loan-subsidy which is aimed at improvement of government-aided infrastructure, teacher training, skill development and others.
"The core objective is to prepare students of secondary and higher secondary level to get access to state of the art infrastructure facilities with capable faculties to lead them to the world of work," he underlined.
Laloo also announced the introduction of a constructive programme under Sakshar Bharat (Adult Literacy Programme) in several educational backward districts in Garo Hills by the Directorate of School Education and Literacy (DSEL).
