The 26-year-old 'Glee' star "completely lost her mind" when she found out about Monteith's death on the evening of July 13.
Michele got the call around 10 pm. The person on the other end of the line had been desperate to reach her before the news broke, reported Us magazine
Monteith, 31, had been found dead in a Vancouver, British Columbia, hotel room that afternoon. The staff discovered his body after breaking his room as he had missed the check out time. The Canada-born actor was in the city to meet his mother.
"Lea has been inconsolable and feels like she's been hit by a truck. She didn't know he'd started using again," the source said.
The actor, who had a drug related past, got treated in a rehab this April but toxicology reports revealed that he had accidentally overdosed on heroin and alcohol.
Monteith was cremated in Vancouver on Tuesday. Michele was with his family at that time.
