In a statement obtained by Variety, Clooney wrote, "Today history will mark giant changes in our world, and lost to most will be that on the same day Miguel Ferrer lost his battle to throat cancer. But not lost to his family."
Clooney added that Ferrer made the world a brighter and better place and that he will loved and remembered forever.
Ferrer was born on February 7, 1955 in Santa Monica, California to one of 1950's top singer Rosemary Clooney and actor Jose Ferrer. He was first cousin to actor Clooney.
Various other celebrities took to social media to pay homage to Ferrer.
Sunny Mabrey, Ferrer's co-star on the 1998 NBC show "LateLine" wrote on Twitter, "RIP Miguel Ferrer, my first ever on-screen boyfriend. And thank you, Al Franken for giving me the opportunity to work with him. #Lateline."
Brian Dietzen's co-star from "NCIS: Los Angeles" Such a sad day. My heart goes out to his family and our friends at NCIS LA. A wonderful man."
Director of the show, Mark Frost mourned the loss of his dear friend in a series of tweets.
"A death in the family: just learned we lost Miguel Ferrer today. Join me pls in sending sympathy to his wife and family," wrote Frost.
"We go back to 1974. Broke in on the same show. Great talent, better man. Working & writing for him a highlight in every part of my life," he added.
Noted British filmmaker Edgar Wright remembered Ferrer's performance in the 2014 film "RoboCop".
Ferrer is survived by his wife, Lori and sons, Lukas and Rafi.
