"Preliminary findings indicate that the child could be sexually assaulted. However, we are awaiting the autopsy report to see if the girl was raped," Deputy Superintendent of Police S Vanitha told PTI.
When police zeroed in on him, it was found that the accused, identified as Karthik, had slit his neck. He had also consumed poison, she said.
The girl's mother had filed a complaint after the class VI student did not return home from school till late last evening.
Investigation revealed that she was last seen going with Karthik, a truck driver, on his motorcycle, the DSP said.
The accused buried the victim's body in a desolate area and was later found by the police, she said.
Vanitha said the motive behind the murder is being investigated.
She said Karthik has been admitted to Sivaganga Government Medical College.
"The cut injury is superficial. However, the kind of poison that he allegedly consumed is being ascertained by the medical authorities," she added.
The incident comes in the backdrop of the murder of a techie, Swathi, in full public view in Chennai. The accused in the case, Ram Kumar, had also allegedly slashed his neck when police went to arrest him.
He was arrested and is being questioned, police said.
