The minor was alone in her house in Basedi area when the accused, identified as Vishnu Thakur (35), entered the premises and tried to molest the girl, SP Rajesh Singh said.
The girl resisted and raised an alarm following which the accused hit her with an axe which was lying nearby, he said, adding that the girl died on the spot.
Meanwhile, her neighbours entered the house and caught the accused and tied his hands, following which they started to beat him.
However, they were pacified.
Policemen are camping in the area in view of tension, he said, adding that the accused has been arrested and a case has been registered in this connection.
