Irate members of the minority community gathered in Mumbra's Amrut Nagar locality burnt a portrait of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis here today, in protest against the state government's decision to exclude madrassas from being defined as schools.
They were protesting against the state government decision to exclude madrassas from being defined as schools during a survey of chidren who are not enrolled in schools.
NCP leader and MLA representing Kalwa-Mumbra, who was also a former cabinet minister Jitendra Awhad led the protest against the BJP-led Maharashtra government's decision.
Irate members of the mob shouted slogans against the BJP government and alleged that the government is being run by the RSS.
Talking to reporters at the spot of the protest, Awhad said that there are around 1,990 madrassas in Maharashtra educating around 2.50 lakh students.
The BJP-led state government's decision would keep these students out of school, he said.
This is an attempt by the state and central governments to keep minority community members out of the mainstream, he alleged.
