Misuse of PILs flayed; petitioner warned

The Kerala High Court has flayed the misuse of Public Interest Litigations by certain litigants and observed that some cases are abuse of the process of law.
The observation was made by a division bench comprising Chief Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice K Vinod Chandran while considering a PIL seeking replacement of three statues of Mahatma Gandhi in this city.
Though the court made a specific query regarding the PIL, counsel could not give a satisfactory answer.
The bench warned the petitioner Antony of nearby Kakkanad that a heavy cost of Rs 55,000 would be imposed, following which the petition was withdrawn yesterday.

The petitioner contended that the statues have no resemblance to the Father of the Nation and such depiction was a "great disrespect" to the country.
