Mob violence following 'objectionable' post in Facebook

A mob allegedly attacked a police station and damaged vehicles in Illambazar and Dubrajpur areas of Birbhum district today after a college student made an "objectionable" post on a social networking website.
A crowd had gheraoed the house of the college student, Sujan Mukherjee, last night after he uploaded the post on Facebook, following which he fled, police said.
Mukherjee, a third year student, was arrested last night itself and taken him to Illambazar police station, they said.
A mob came to the police station today and demanded that the accused be handed over to them, police said.
The mob damaged the police station and police vehicles following which the police used tear gas shells to disperse it. The mob then put up a road blockade in NH-60 and damaged several vehicles.

However, the situation is now under control, Superintendent of Police Mukesh Kumar said.
"Huge force has been deployed in the area. We are keeping a vigil on the situation," the SP said.
The accused, Kumar, was charged with various sections of the IT Act and Indian Penal Code. A Bolpur court remanded him to 14 days' judicial custody.
