While an "excited" Modi tweeted in Japanese language to strike a chord with the Japanese people, Abe responded hours later by saying "India has a special place in my heart".
Both leaders said they eagerly looked forward to meeting each other.
"Friends from Japan asked me to talk to the people of Japan directly in Japanese. I also thank them for helping with the translation," tweeted Modi who will be embarking on his first bilateral visit outside the subcontinent since becoming the Prime Minister in May.
In the tweets, he said he was keenly looking forward to the trip to take the "time-tested" bilateral ties to a new level and increase cooperation in various fields.
"Scale of innovation and level of precision among the people of Japan is admirable," he said.
In his tweets, Abe said "India has a special place in my heart".
Sending out a message to Modi, he said "I am eagerly waiting for your arrival in Kyoto this weekend. Your first visit to Japan as Indian PM will add a new chapter to our strategic partnership."
On his first bilateral visit outside the subcontinent, Modi will have an "extremely substantive" agenda when he travels to Japan amid "great expectations" of the strategic and global partnership being taken to a new level.
