Facing flak over the rape and murder of a woman in the state capital, Uttar Pradesh government today directed officials to identify 10 districts having maximum crime rate and chalk-out a strategy to curb offences against women.
Chief Secretary Alok Ranjan, who held a high-level meeting here, directed senior officials to chalk out a strategy at micro-level to curb crime against women.
"For checking crime against women, a strategy should be worked out at the micro-level in all the districts and should be effectively implemented," the chief secretary said.
He directed the officials to identify main spots in the cities where these crimes are frequently reported and deploy police force in strength, besides initiating action against identified criminals under the 'Gangsters and Goondas Act'.
The chief secretary also directed the police to arrest the culprits of the Mohanlalganj rape incident at the earliest and ensure that such incidents are not repeated.
"In case of any mishappening, the responsibility of the concerned police station in-charge should be fixed and if found lax, action be taken against him," he said.
The top state bureaucrat also asked the officials to keep a check on liquor shops, saying it need to be ensured that they do not become centres of embarrassment for women and other people in the vicinity, according to a statement.
Senior officials including Principal Secretary (Home) Rakesh Bahadur, DGP AL Bannerji, Home Secretary Kamal Saxena, ADG and in-charge of women cell in the DGP office, Sutapa Sanyal were present in the meeting.
