In order to check illegal supply of alcohol ahead of the Rajouri Garden Assembly bypoll, the Election Commission has directed the Delhi government to keep a tab on the sale of liquor in the city.
The Excise Department has also issued instructions to all liquor vends to maintain a back-up of the CCTV footages till the bypoll on April 9.
"We have directed the Excise Department to monitor vends having more than 30 per cent rise in the sale of liquor as compared to the previous month," Chief Electoral Officer of Delhi Chandra Bhushan Kumar said.
A senior government official said that the department will monitor the sale of all liquor vends, also located in shopping malls in the national capital.
The Excise Department has warned of strict action against those vends who violate the orders, the official said.
"We have asked all vends that the sale should be done through scanner only. Upto date brand-wise stock register should also be maintained," the official said.
The bypoll to Rajouri Garden Assembly seat fell vacant after sitting AAP MLA Jarnail Singh resigned from the post to contest the Punjab Assembly polls last month.
The polling will be held on April 9, days before the MCD elections on April 23.
