It was suspected that Saravanan and his mother could have been murdered by the gang to avenge the killing of Saravanan's wife Pandimeenal four months ago by Saravanan following a quarrel over Pandimeenal not begetting a child.
The couple were married six years ago and no children and there were frequent quarrels between them over this. Enraged Saravanan murdered his wife after a quarrel, police said.
Saravanan and his mother were arrested and released on bail only recently.
The gang members had followed the bus in bikes and stopped the bus at Valaiyankavu and hacked them to death with sickles.
The gang esscaped after the murder, police said.
Superintendent of Police Durai said the gang would have murdered the two persons for the avenge of the murder of Pandimeenal.
A speacial team had been formed to nab the gang, he said.
