The motorcycle was abandoned by the killers, about 12 km from the spot of the crime, on the G T Road near Ladhowal in the outskirts of the city. The details of the two-wheeler was being verified, the police said.
The motor cycle bore registration number PB10CU-7223, Police Commissioner R N Dhoke said, adding, "This has made easier for us to trace the killers. This clue of route used by assailants will definitely help us in the investigations."
"The assailants had used the flyover while passing through Slemtabri chowk after killing the RSS leader. That is why they escaped CCTV cameras installed under the bridge on the G T Road there under the 'Safe City Project'", Dhoke said.
The two unidentified assailants shot dead senior Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) leader Ravinder Gosain (60) in the Kailash Nagar locality here yesterday when he was returning home after attending a morning drill (RSS shakha).
Gosain died on the spot, the police said.
Senior BJP leader and former minister Manoranjan Kalia, who was in the city today, said, "The incident is a total collapse of law-and-order machinery in the state. The situation has gone from bad to worse. Miscreants are executing murders in broad daylight without any fear of the police."
Khaira condemned the killing of Gosain and the police's "failure" to nab the assailants.
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who was in Punjab yesterday, had raised with Chief Minister Amarinder Singh the killing of the RSS leader and told him to get the matter thoroughly investigated speedily, former Punjab BJP chief Kamal Sharma had said.
