Madhya Pradesh jails have 42,057 prisoners against a sanctioned inmate capacity of 28,601, state Home Minister Bala Bachchan informed the Assembly Saturday.
The minister gave the information in a written reply to a question by Congress MLA Munnalal Goyal.
This amounts to 47 per cent more prisoners being lodged in the state's 125 jails than their capacity, as on December 31, 2018.
Bachchan said efforts are on to ensure this crowding is reduced.
He also informed the House that all 125 jails in the state have video-conferencing facilities.
