The outcome of the Assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh threw several surprises: A younger brother defeating his elder sibling in Barwah seat while a four-time MLA lost to his nephew from Barwani constituency.
In a triangular contest in Khargone district's Barwah seat, two brothers were pitted against each other from the BJP and Congress.
BJP's sitting MLA Hitendra Singh Solanki (49), who had won the polls from Barwah seat in 2003 and 2008, was pitted against his elder brother Rajendra Singh Solanki (57), fielded by the Congress party to stop him (Hitendra) from winning the seat for a third consecutive term.
Because of the presence of a rebel Independent candidate Sachin Birla (34) who cornered 61,970 votes, Rajendra not only lost the polls at the hands of his younger brother but was also relegated to the third position with 14,323 votes.
Hitendra won the polls by securing 67,600 votes to score a hat-trick. Birla contested as an Independent candidate after Congress refused him a ticket.
At the Barwani seat, sitting BJP MLA Prem Singh Patel (52) lost the polls with a margin of 10,527 votes against his nephew Ramesh Patel (40) of Congress.
Ramesh secured 77,761 votes while Prem Singh managed to get 67,234 votes. Ramesh, also the chairman of Barwani District Panchayat, had tried his luck for the first time in the Assembly elections.
