MP woman fights for indoor lavatory; Sulabh comes to rescue

After facing humiliation of defecating in open for almost a year, Harda resident Chhaya decided to leave her husband Narayan Nagre and not to return till he constructed a toilet at their residence, they said.

This led to an ugly fight between the duo a few days back in which both were injured and were admitted to a hospital in Harda.

When Sulabh International chairman Bindeshwar Pathak came to know about the incident through media, he decided to intervene and directed the NGO's Bhopal office to construct a toilet at their residence at the earliest, the NGO officials said.

Few months ago, Anita, a tribal bride from Madhya Pradesh's Betul district had risked her marriage and left her household in the absence of an indoor lavatory.

She was even invited by President Pratibha Patil and Union Minister for Rural Development Jairam Ramesh, who honoured her for her boldness towards a social cause.

Last week in eastern Uttar Pradesh, Pathak honoured three newly-wed women who had refused to stay with their in-laws' home due to absence of proper toilet.

As per a data, over 660 million people in India still defecate in the open causing serious diseases.
