Goa-based Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) has put floating booms in the waters after a portion of dry dock belonging to one of the shipyard sank today.
The dry dock, which is used to lift the ship from waters to the yard for repairs, was located inside Western India Shipyard Limited, a venture in Vasco town which is currently shutdown due to crisis.
"A part of the dry dock which was precariously placed in Western India Shipyard has sunk raising fears of oil pollution.
"We have placed the booms around the place where the dry dock has sunk," MPT Chairman I Jayakumar told reporters today.
The shipyard is located in the area of MPT in Vasco town.
Jayakumar said the MPT has already filed a police complaint against Western India Shipyard Limited under relevant section for the laxity due to which the part of dry dock has sunk.
"The Western India Shipyard Limited is in crisis due to which they have not been maintaining the dry dock.
"We have been writing to them asking them to maintain it to save it from sinking," he said.
Jayakumar recalled that in a similar fashion, a ship which was anchored at the shipyard, had sunk last year.
The MPT has now moved the High Court seeking to auction the ship which fears to create environmental pollution, he said.
He said it is not worth salvaging the sunken portion of the dry dock without maintaining it so it would be allowed to remain there till further decision.
