The Maharaja Sayajirao University (MSU)of Baroda plans to introduce a scheme to appoint eminent teachers with expertise and experience as "distinguished professors" after their retirement.
"The MSU senate approved the scheme at its last meeting. The scheme shall be applicable to such scholars who have ongoing research projects on hand. Such a scheme is already in existence at a few other Indian universities like the Banaras Hindu University, Pune University, University of Mysore etc," Maharaja Sayajirao University (MSU) of Baroda Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh told PTI.
The retirement age at MSU, like all other state Universities, is 62 years, while that in Central Universities it is 65 years, which is extendable to 70 years.
Hence, the eminent teachers retiring from MSU at the age of 62 years, who are fellows of various academies and have major research projects to complete, face difficulties in continuing their academic engagements after retirement.
The scheme is meant to provide continuity in research engagement to such distinguished retiring teachers and for the benefit of their scholarship to the university.
According to the above scheme, a distinguished professor appointed in any university department after the age of 62 years would be given a tenure of three years in the first instance, which could be extended by two years more.
However, no professor can continue to work as distinguished professor after the age of 70 years.
