Indian Women's Press Corps today condemned the brutal gangrape of a photojournalist in Mumbai and demanded immediate and stringent action against the perpetrators of the heinous crime.
In a statement, IWPC said ironically, Mumbai was considered as one of the safest cities for working women.
The women's media organisation also said the government should provide a secure environment for women on priority basis.
This recent incident brings back memories of the national outrage that was sparked by the rape of a young physiotherapist in Delhi last December. It has also been over a year when Tongam Rina, a journalist in Arunachal Pradesh, was attacked by gunmen in Itanagar, yet her assailants have still not been brought to justice, the statement said.
IWPC said the concerns about safety and security limit an woman's mobility and activities and such heinous acts are violation of the freedom of women and of their movement in their workplace and personal space.
As more and more women join the media workforce, it is the responsibility of the administration and media organisations to ensure that women media personnel feel safe as they carry out their professional duties, it said.
