Santhanam, alias Manoj Kumar, suffered a bout of epileptic seizures in the wee hours and was taken to the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Hospital after being treated in the jail, prison authorities and city police said.
He was declared "brought dead" at the hospital, they added.
Police said he was arrested early this year in connection with a murder case in Namakkal in 2011 and was also allegedly involved in some other cases of house-breaking.
Police have registered a case while an inquiry by the Revenue Divisional Officer, mandatory in custodial deaths, was also on, they said.
