The Nagaland Legislative Assembly today held a discussion on the Naga Political Issue (NPI) with most members saying the demand and offers made by both the NSCN(IM) and the Centre should be made public and also to unitedly work towards an early solution to the vexed problem.
Altogether 22 members took part in the discussion today, which would continue tomorrow.
Initiating the discussions on NPI, Chief Minister T R Zeliang said the issue has dominated the political discourse of the Nagas during the last six decades and they want a final and peaceful solution to the Naga Political Issue.
Zeliang said the DAN government has always given high priority to the issue since its formation in 2003 and the Political Affairs Committee has also been formed for the same.
He gave a briefing on the significant events in the current peace process and said the Centre has been appraised that the declaration of the state as Disturbed Area should be lifted.
He said the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister were also being praised about the Naga political situation.
Congress Legislature Party leader and minister for PHE, Tokheho said the issue concerned all citizens of the state and said a solution acceptable to all sections of the people may not be achieved and at this juncture the Nagas should decide whether to fight for sovereignty or for economic independence.
BJP Legislature Party leader and minister for Transport and Civil Aviation, Paiwang said the state government was effectively playing the role of facilitator and the Centre was also making sincere efforts for a solution to the Naga Political Issue.
JD(U) Legislature Party leader and Parliamentary Secretary, Land Resources and Excise, B S Nanglang said aspirations of the young people should also be considered while preparing the roadmap to the solution.
NCP legislature party leader and Parliamentary Secretary for Land Revenue, L Khumo said if both the negotiating parties come to a solution, the party would accept it.
