The Narada sting operation had its echo in the West Bengal assembly today during an orientation programme for first time MLAs.
Senior Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy, who was among those present at the orientation programme, was asked by CPI-M MLA Tanmoy Bhttacharjee whether privilege should be raised against any MLA if he was allegedly caught in a sting operation.
Roy, who was a former MLA in the Assembly had raised questions over Mohammed Ilyas, the erstwhile CPI MLA from Nandigram, who was caught on camera allegedly taking a bribe from an NGO for development work in a sting operation by a private TV channel in 2007.
Roy replied, "I had not raised any privilege on the issue, I had raised a question about the incident."
He repeated this while speaking to newsmen later.
According to CPI(M) sources, the question was raised with an apparent reference to the Narada sting operation.
About 95 MLAs cutting across party lines were given the training in the presence of Speaker Biman Banerjee, Leader of Opposition Abdul Mannan, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Partha Chatterjee, Senior TMC MP Sudip Bandopadhaya and former Left Front minister Prabodh Chandra Sinha, besides Roy.
Few old timers were also present at the training.
