Government auditor CAG has said the National Library in Kolkata and the Ministry of Culture did not take adequate steps for creation of a database of books and retroconversion of all bibliographic records.
"The library as well as the Ministry had not taken adequate steps during 2010-2015 in implementing the accepted recommendations of the performance audit pertaining mainly to creation of database of books published in India, faster processing of books, conducting of stock verification of all the divisions and providing value added services to the readers," the Comptroller and Auditor General of India said in its report.
However, according to the auditor, the Ministry in March said it has given necessary orders for the completion of the task.
It also said that poor planning and increase in scope of work of Bharata Kalakshetra Auditorium without proper approval increased the expenditure from Rs 1.41 crore to Rs 7.63 crore.
The Kalakshetra Foundation, which controls the Bharata Kalakshetra Auditorium, was recognised by the government of India as an institute of national importance by an act of Parliament in 1993 and is now an autonomous body under the Ministry of Culture.
