BJP MLA and chief parliamentary secretary Navjot Kaur Sidhu, who had launched an indefinite hunger strike here, today called off her fast following intervention by Punjab cabinet minister Anil Joshi.
BJP MLA from Amritsar (North) Joshi visited the spot and offered a glass of juice to Sidhu, who had yesterday sat on indefinite hunger strike demanding release of funds for her constituency.
Assuring Sidhu, MLA from Amritsar (East), of adequate funds, Joshi said tender for developmental works of Rs 10 crore will be floated by Wednesday and developmental works in her constituency in this regard will be initiated at the earliest.
Sidhu, who has earlier termed Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal as 'father figure', said: "Joshi has come here as my brother and he did what a brother could do for his sister but at the same time Punjab CM Badal failed to do duty of father towards daughter."
Simply saying the word daughter was not enough unless one act as per his words, she added.
Joshi said, "Sidhu is my sister and I am here as her brother. It is Indian culture sister often get annoyed from brothers but it becomes the duty of brother to always take care of their sisters. I will always take care of my respectable sister in future, too."
Sidhu, wife of cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu, had demanded SAD-BJP government should allocate adequate funds for carrying out development projects which have been pending for long in her area.
The state government had sanctioned Rs 10 crore for roadwork project for Amritsar East Assembly segment but got delayed "forcing" her to go on a hunger strike yesterday.
Stating that the state government had "liberally allocated" funds for Sidhu's constituency, Chief Minister Badal had yesterday termed it "unfortunate" that the BJP MLA chose the Independence Day for sitting on hunger-strike.
