Deepak Mankar, a Nationalist Congress Party corporator who is accused of abetting the suicide of a real estate broker in the city, has surrendered before the police.
Besides the charge of abetment of suicide under the IPC, Mankar has also been booked under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).
Mankar surrendered before police yesterday after the Supreme Court rejected his anticipatory bail application on July 24.
A court here remanded him in police custody till August 6.
The police lodged a case against Mankar and six others for allegedly abetting the suicide of real estate broker Jitendra Jagtap who jumped in front of a moving train last month.
A suicide note purportedly written by Jagtap blamed Mankar and others for his decision to end the life.
According to the FIR lodged by Jagtap's son, Mankar along with a builder was putting pressure on Jagtap to give up a plot of land in Rasta Peth area.
Mankar in his anticipatory bail plea claimed that he and the builder were the legal owners of the land.
