The Nagaland Contractors' and Suppliers' Union (NCSU) has called off their proposed 12-hour National Highway-29 (Dimapur-Kohima Road) bandh.
The 12-hour bandh, supposed to be in force from 6 AM today, was called off in view of appeals from Governor P B Acharya, Chief Minister T R Zeliang and various tribal organisations and civil societies led by Naga Hoho down to students' organisation.
The NCSU agreed to the proposal to defer the bandh in view of the ensuing festive season, NCSU President Pele Khezhie and General Secretary John Kath said in a statement here midnight last.
"The NCSU is overwhelmed with the support extended to us by various Naga civil societies led by Naga Hoho, Naga Mothers' Association, Nagaland Tribes Council down to students organisations, as well as Governor P B Acharya, Chief Minister T R Zeliang, Lok Sabha MP Neiphiu Rio and Minister for National Highways, Nuklutoshi and various political parties," they said.
Therefore, accepting the appeal, NCSU informed that the proposed National Highway-29 bandh has been kept in abeyance till further notice.
On their demand, the NCSU said at least one of the three-phase works for four laning of Dimapur-Kohima Road should be divided into smaller projects so that the local contractors will also be able to bid for the tender.
"The NCSU does not accept the notice inviting tender already floated by NHIDCL," they said.
"We are hopeful that the Union MoRTH (Ministry of Road Transport and Highways) will listen to our request and pleas supported by the Government of Nagaland, Naga civil societies and general public in the interest of the state in general," the NCSU officials said.
