The National Commission for Women (NCW) has formed an inquiry panel to look into the case involving alleged abduction and gang rape of a 38-year-old woman who was an inmate of a home for mentally-challenged in Kolkata.

The woman was abducted from a road and gang-raped after she went out at night breaking a lock. A group of men got her in a car by force from near the home at Panchasayar in south-eastern fringes of the city and raped her in the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday.

The NCW, taking suo motu cognisance in the matter, formed an inquiry committee headed by its member Chandramukhi Devi to investigate the case.

The commission also asked West Bengal police chief to treat the case on priority and hold speedy investigation followed by the identification and arrest of all those involved.

"The inquiry committee headed by the member will visit Kolkata on November 15 and evaluate the action taken in this case by the officials. The commission through the media is requesting the victim and her family to reach out to the NCW for any help or assistance required," the NCW said.

NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma said it is unfortunate that such a heinous crime has been committed and the target is a helpless mentally-challenged woman.
