BJP-backed National Democratic Teachers Front (NDTF) today demanded that the probe into the February 9 incident on the JNU campus that triggered a political storm, be conducted "impartially".
The members of NDTF submitted a memorandum, signed by about 1,000 teachers of Delhi University, to President Pranab Mukherjee.
"What happened in JNU on February 9 cannot be condoned on the pretext of freedom of speech and freedom of dissent. Anti-India slogans were openly raised by seditious elements for the destruction and division of India, for secession of Kashmir and in favour of terrorists who were awarded death sentence by the Supreme Court after a prolonged judicial process.
"We urge you to intervene and issue appropriate orders to the authorities concerned for an impartial probe into the happenings of Feb 9. Guilty should not be spared and should be severely punished but no innocent should be implicated. There should also be a comprehensive inquiry into activities inside JNU which have led to the present situation," the memorandum says.
A K Bhagi, President of NDTF, highlighted the need for a a thorough investigation into the incident covering circumstances which led to such anti-India activities and elements thereof.
"It should also be ensured that everyone cooperates in inquiry as NDTF believes that it is a serious matter and all the miscreants involved must be punished severely. At the same time, it should also be ensured that innocent students are not inconvenienced," Bhagi said.
"Since it is a case of sedition, an appeal should be made to political parties too to stand united as a division on this issue may send a wrong message to terrorists and pro- separatists.
