Chief Minister Vijay Rupani today sought the support of society to make Gujarat tobacco-free and said his government was committed to eradicating cancer from the state.

He said that there was need to create awareness among those in the younger generation who are addicted to tobacco.

"It is the demand of the times that we should make our society tobacco-free. We are committed to eradicating cancer from Gujarat," Rupani said today.

He said that the state government was planning to have more super speciality hospitals so that people living in remote areas could also get quality medical treatment.

He was speaking after inaugurating a cancer awareness camp organised here by the Shri Pujit Rupani Memorial Trust, a welfare organisation formed in the name of the Gujarat chief minister's late son. The Gujarat CM is the chairman of the trust.

The trust has decided to organise cancer awareness camps here in partnership with the Rotary Club of Rajkot (Midtown) and the Ahmedabad-based HCG Hospital.

According to the organisers, leading oncologists from Ahmedabad would check 100 patients free of cost during each of these camps.

Rupani, during his visit to the city, also laid the foundation stones for a multi-purpose sports complex and a science museum.
