Amid ongoing violence in Kashmir, moderate Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq today said there is a need to understand the "truth and reality" of the Kashnir issue and address it accordingly.
"Kashmir issue is not about governance or giving economic packages, neither is about economic incentives," he said.
"The only way out of this problem is to address the problem political and not militarily and initiate engagements among all stakeholders to the issue; that is India, Pakistan and most importantly the people of Jammu and Kashmir with the view to resolve the issue once for all," he said.
He criticised the Centre's decision of sending more paramilitary forces to Kashmir to deal with the unrest, saying it will only add fuel to the fire.
Meanwhile, the moderate Hurriyat Conference, along with hardline Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani and JKLF issued a joint statement, saying local police should not carry weapons, lethal or otherwise, while dealing with protesters, since the are a "part and parcel" of the Kashmiri society.
Violent protests erupted in Kashmir Valley following the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen's poster boy Burhan Wani in an joint operation by Jammu and Kashmir Police and the army last Friday.
So far, 25 civilians have been been killed and more than 350 people, including over 115 security forces, injured in the clashes between people and security personnel.
