Pope Francis has erected the new diocese of Sultanpet with some territories taken from the diocese of Calicut and Coimbatore,making it suffragan of the Archdiocese of Verapoly.
The Pope has appointed Monsignor Peter Albir Antony Samy, as the first Bishop of the Sultanpet diocese.
The ecclesiastical provision announcing the creation of Sulthanpet diocese was formally read out by chancellor of Calicut diocese Fr A D Mathew in the presence of Bishop Varghese Chakkalakkal at a ceremony at Bishops house today.
Bishop Chakkalakkal said the people's long cherished dream has been fulfilled with the creation of the new diocese.
