The police will use the new law to deal with people vandalising government property, city police commissioner Rajeev Kumar today said.
Referring to vandalism at the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital by a mob allegedly belonging to the family of the stolen baby, Kumar said that the police would deal with such situations "very seriously".
"There are people who indulge in vandalism. We will handle them very seriously. Even yesterday at the Medical college if somebody has done something wrong we will ensure that he is prosecuted under the new law which has been passed," Kumar said.
The state government recently introduced an amendment to the West Bengal Prevention of Defacement of Property Act to stop rampant damage of government property. The amended bill would deter vandals, rioters and arsonists who could face imprisonment up to a maximum of seven years for damaging property.
