Adolescent students across the country will now be trained in life skills and best health practices through a digital campaign being run in schools by an NGO.
Centre for Catalyzing Change (C3), formerly known as CEDPA India, is a non-governmental organization working in India since late 1980's to increase opportunities for adolescent girls and boys and youth.
"Policies and programmes in India have increasingly recognized that adolescents are a vulnerable group with special needs, including the area of Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH). However, there have been challenges in reaching out since the numbers are huge," a statement said.
"Traditional classroom education, especially targeting youth around life skills and reproductive health, is sometimes not totally effective according to public health experts and epidemiologists.
"Evaluations of adolescent education programs in the country have brought forth that the students were eager to learn but the quality of adolescent education being imparted in schools was poor - the teachers had poor facilitation skills and were hesitant in conducting sessions on sensitive topics," it added.
A consultation was held in the national capital earlier this week, to share the process and learnings of designing, developing and implementing a graded digital curriculum - "YouthLIFE".
Correct understanding of gender stereotypes, bullying, gender and equity and myths about transmission of HIV were among the topics that were discussed during the consultation.
