Taking suo motu cognisance of air pollution in Kochi and damage to biodiversity in Munnar, the National Green Tribunal (Southern Zone) has issued notice to the Kerala government.
Judicial Member, NGT, Justice P Jyothimani took up both the issues based on media reports.
In its recent notice to the authorities, the NGT cited a newspaper report that claimed the air quality in Kochi city had deteriorated resulting in pollution problem, respiratory diseases, and occurrences of cancer.
Also, emissions from the vehicles played an important role in increasing the black carbon content in the atmosphere, it noted.
Ordering notice separately, NGT referred to another media report which had claimed that Munnar's rich biodiversity was being damaged by illegal mining, constructions and quarrying.
Such activities were causing pollution in the hill station at Western Ghats as well, it said.
Also, by levelling mountains, marshlands and by sealing water courses, multi-storeyed buildings had come up in Munnar flouting all environmental norms, it quoted the media report to say.
Notice has been sent to top Kerala authorities including its Chief Secretary and the state Environment and Forest Secretary on the issue of Kochi pollution.
While senior officials, including Environment and Forest secretary, have been given notice on the Munnar issue.
Both matters have been posted for hearing on May 3.
Kerala Government counsel Suvitha A S told PTI that notices were received two days ago and that appropriate replies will be filed.
