NHPC committed to river bank protection

NHPC today said it is committed to take up erosion control measures on both banks of the Subansiri river for a stretch of 30 km in accordance with recommendations of two panels set up for the Subansiri Lower Hydro Electric Project.
NHPC in a release said that a survey of 30 km area downstream of the dam has been carried out jointly by the PSU and Assam Water Resource Department and stretches have been identified on both the banks of the river requiring erosion control measures.
The PSU submitted its proposal and detailed project report to Core Group of Assam, constituted to implement JSC report concerning mitigation of downstream impact of Subansiri Lower Project, and it is under consideration for technical vetting and approval before its implementation.

Flexituff, which is executing similar works in Water Resource Department, Assam requested NHPC to carry out demo work with Geo synthetic Trap Bags in line with similar works being carried out across River Ranganadi and it began work on the right bank of River Subansiri near Dakhin Rupahi and the work is still in progress.
Due to rise in river discharge on account of incessant rainfall in this area for more than a week, the bottom layer of geo synthetic trap bag got submerged and demo work has been discontinued temporarily, the release pointed out.
The portion of works done by Flexituff till date is intact and stable and no damage has been done while the site was visited by officers of Assam Water Resources Department which found the work under Demo done so far as satisfactory, the release added.
