NHRC today directed the Tamil Nadu government to take action against police officials who had reportedly falsely implicated a person in two cases and subjected him to severe physical torture in custody.
National Human Rights Commission directed the state Chief Secretary to take appropriate action against 'delinquent' police officials and pay monetary relief of Rs 15,000 to a victim, who was reportedly falsely implicated, arrested and subjected to severe physical torture in custody in 2010.
NHRC has also asked for a compliance report along with a proof of payment within six weeks.
Two cases were registered against the complainant and his colleague under different section of IPC and the chargesheets were already filed in court and the correctness was to be decided only by the court, an NHRC press release said.
"However, from the human rights point of view, Tamil Nadu Director General of Police was asked to submit reports on the victim's torture in police custody. Subsequently the Commission, after careful consideration of material on record, found the complainant was tortured during police custody remand and a case of breach of human rights was made out," it added.
