Sentiment was subdued on weak global cues, though the downside was capped on account of short-covering.
Asian stocks edged lower after a softer lead from Wall Street, with the vote on a bill to replace Obamacare in the US delayed.
European stocks were trading lower in their afternoon trade.
The NSE 50-share Nifty index opened slightly higher at 9,520.20 and hovered in a range of 9,522.50 and 9,474.35 before ending at 9,491.25, a decline of 20.15 points, or 0.21 per cent.
Sector-wise, Energy dropped 1.14 per cent, FMCG 0.79 per cent, Media 0.76 per cent and PSU Bank 0.64 per cent.
Buying was witnessed in Metal (1.62 per cent), IT (0.64 per cent) and Infra (0.51 per cent).
In the broader market, the Nifty mid-cap and small-cap indices gained 0.39 per cent and 0.45 per cent, respectively.
Major index losers were Reliance (2.69 per cent), Asian Paints (2.30 per cent), Zee (1.47 per cent), HDFC (1.34 per cent) and ITC (1.28 per cent).
Gainers included Tech Mahindra (3.20 per cent), Yes Bank (2.42 per cent), Vedanta (2.28 percent), Eicher Motors (2.11 per cent) and Ultratech Cement (2.07 per cent).
Total securities that hit their price bands were 107.
Turnover in the cash segment declined to Rs 21,803.49 crore from Rs 24,855.88 crore yesterday.
A total of 12,837.57 lakh shares changed hands in 82,40,880 trades.
The market capitalisation of listed firms on the NSE stood at Rs 1,23,32,759 crore.
