Sentiments were affected after European Central Bank (ECB) kept the interest rate unchanged and did not announce an extension of its quantitative easing programme.
"Following cues from global equity market, benchmark index Nifty opened lower with a loss of 19 points at 8,934 mark," Veracity Financial Services Research Analyst Digesh Shah said.
In the first hour of trade, Nifty posted the day's high of 8,939, but gave up the gains on selling pressure, closing with a loss of 86 points, or 0.96 per cent.
Major losers were Hindalco (4.38 per cent), followed by UltraTech Cement (3.93 per cent), Yes Bank (3.91 per cent), Axis Bank (2.58 per cent) and ITC (2.49 per cent).
However, ONGC rose by 3.51 per cent, followed by Gail India (1.61 per cent), Wipro (1.41 per cent), TCS (1.31 per cent) and Reliance (1.08 per cent).
A total of 560 scrips advanced, 1,056 declined, while 72 remained unchanged. Total securities that hit their price bands were 100.
Turnover in cash segment fell to Rs 23,159.88 crore from Rs 23,772.11 crore yesterday.
