Speculators covered shorts encouraged by good FII inflows and indications of business-friendly government after general election amid good Q4 earning results. The indices registered all-time new high of 6,861.60 during intra-day.
Persistent buying was seen mainly in Banking, FMCG, Pharma, Infra, Auto and Metal counters, while Energy and IT counters witnessed profit-booking.
Meanwhile, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought shares worth a net Rs 162.93 crore yesterday, as per the provisional data from the stock exchanges.
State-owned Bank of Baroda surged 3.34 per cent, Kotak Bank 2.63 per cent, Infra major L&T 2.21 per cent, followed by PNB by 2.11 per cent.
Energy major Cairn fell 3.11 per cent and realty firm weight DLF dropped 2.99 per cent.
Other gainers were Ambuja Cement, Tata Steel, HDFC Bank, BHEL, ACC and GAIL. However, IDFC, BPCL, Ultracemco, NTPC and HCL Tech were the key losers.
Turnover in the cash segment jumped to Rs 18,017.33 crore from Rs 12,757.57 crore yesterday. A total of 9,947.22 lakh shares changed hands in 68,93,161 trades, while market capitalisation stood at Rs 74,95,079 crore.
