Opening slightly higher, the market immediately succumbed to correction and witnessed choppy range-bound momentum loomed by negative global-peers due to political uncertainty in US, it started to recover from late afternoon and gained marginally to close with new highs.
The Nifty resumed flat at 9,517.60 hovered between all- time fresh highs at 9,532.60 and day's low at 9,486.10, before ending at new record peak of 9,525.75, showing a gain of 13.50 points, or 0.14 per cent. (Surpassing its yesterday's record closing peak of 9,512.25).
Overseas, Asian stocks ended lower amid political and legal turmoil surrounding US President Donald Trump. European markets were also trading lower during the afternoon.
Shares of Tata Steel today ended over 8 per cent higher, after the company's consolidated net loss narrowed for the March quarter.
Sector-wise, Nifty metal surged by 2.25 per cent, followed by auto 0.68 per cent, infra 0.33 per cent, commodities 0.25 per cent and private bank 0.19 per cent.
While, PSU bank lost 0.61 per cent, FMCG, 0.43 per cent, pharma 0.24 per cent, IT 0.23 per cent and energy 0.22 per cent.
Major index gainers were Tata Steel 8.18 per cent, Infratel 3.55 per cent, Indiabulls Housing Finance 2.74 per cent, Tata Motors 2.71 per cent and ICICI Bank 2.35 per cent.
Notable losers were Tech Mahindra down by 2.91 per cent, ACC 2.06 per cent, Bosch 1.97 per cent, Yes Bank 1.94 per cent and Adani Port 1.68 per cent.
Meanwhile, FIIs bought shares worth net Rs 858.29 crore yesterday, as per provisional figures issued by the stock exchanges.
A total of 703 scrips advanced, 961 declined, while 87 remained unchanged. Total securities that hit their price bands were 106.
A total of 12,271.23 lakh shares changed hands in 9,408,054 trades. The market capitalisation of listed firms stood at Rs 12,578,179 crore.
