There is no proposal to regulate fees in private professional institutions, the Rajya Sabha was informed today.
The Supreme Court has ordered that every state government should constitute a committee to fix the ceiling on the fees chargeable by a professional college or class of professional colleges, HRD Minister Smriti Irani said in a written reply.
This committee should, after hearing the professional colleges, fix the fee once every three years or at such longer period, as it may think appropriate until such time that the National Fee Committee fixes such norms, she said.
"As of today, however, there is no legislation proposed to regulate fees in private professional institutions," she said to a question.
Meanwhile, the first meeting of the fee committee of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) was held on June 30.
AICTE had in March 2006 constituted a fee committee under the chairmanship of Justice Ranganathan Mishra, the former Chief Justice of India.
The committee could not convene its meeting due to ill health of Justice Mishra and his death thereafter.
On May 7, another committee under the Chairmanship of Justice Srikrishna was constituted to fix the norms and guidelines of fee structure in private professional institutions.
In a separate reply, the Minister said AICTE has developed the model curriculum of management, pharmacy, architecture and town planning courses at degree level and engineering courses at diploma level to address the industry requirements and to enhance the employability.
