A day after the government barred use of red beacons by VVIPs including the President, the Prime Minister and Chief Ministers from May 1, the judges of the Delhi High Court gave it up from this afternoon.
At a pre-lunch meeting held by all judges of the high court, it was decided to give up the use of red beacons on their official cars, sources in the court said.
The judges' vehicles, parked in the high court premises, were seen without the red lights affixed on top of them.
According to the court sources, Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice S Muralidhar have never used a red beacon, nor have ever taken Personal Security Officers which they are entitled to.
There are presently 34 judges in the high court.
Seeking to end the VIP culture, the Union Cabinet had yesterday decided that beacon lights will be removed from all vehicles, except emergency vehicles, like ambulances and fire brigade which would use blue lights.
