Government and privates buses and autorickshaws were off the roads, while only a few private vehicles plied.
Buses from Karnataka were stopped at the Kerala border as a precautionary measure, police said.
Police personnel were deployed in strength at Cheemeni, Cheruvathur, Kanhangad, Kumbala and Kasargod are deployed in strength to prevent any untoward incident.
Mobile patrolling was also put in place, police said.
BJP had called the hartal to protest against the alleged attack on two of its cadres during a march by it yesterday, following which a clash broke out between the two groups. However none were injured.
