Normalcy today returned at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) campus after the agitating students called off their protest.
The students yesterday staged a dharna outside the Vice-Chancellor's office against the proposal of transferring university land to private parties for development work.
The protestors alleged that University security staff resorted to a lathicharge late last night after they blocked the gate of Vice Chancellor's office, where a special meeting of the varsity Executive council was talking place.
When contacted, the University spokesman today said, "When the protestors were physically preventing the members of the Executive councils from leaving the venue of the meeting after it had concluded. There was no option but to use minimum force for the safety of the members and escorting them outside".
The spokesman had on Friday announced that a decision on this matter had been deferred but the protestors were not ready to accept this climb down.
The Vice President of the All India AMU old boys Association Azam Meer told PTI that his Association would fully support students and AMUTA and all other AMU based Associations that are demanding revocation of any such proposal for transferring university land to private players.
