Suspected Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Shiv Sena activists today attacked migrant workers from North India and ransacked their properties in adjoining Kolhapur district after a two-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a labourer from Jharkhand.
Two persons received minor injures when the activists, armed with sticks, went on a rampage and targeted migrant workers, their shops and houses in Laksyateerth Vasavth, the area where the rape incident took place yesterday, Police Control Room sources in Kolhapur told PTI by phone.
Police used batons to disperse the violent mob and restore order.
The accused, Rajusingh Bablu Singh, who was working at a construction site in the area, has been arrested, sources said.
The victim, whose condition is said to be stable, is the daughter of a watchman who too worked at the construction site in the South Maharashtra district, about 400km from Mumbai, they added.
