Not granted approval for conversion into private universities

Puducherry government today said it has not not granted approval to any of higher education institutions in the Union Territory for converting themselves into deemed to be universities or private universities.
Secretary to Education Ragesh Chandra said in a release here that the council of ministers had at its recent meeting only approved of a set of guidelines as a policy to scrutinize applications submitted by different trusts to open private universities here so as to bring in education of high quality in the higher education sector.
The policy of the government would be published and a detailed scrutiny of the applications of various trusts to start the universities would be taken up. A Bill would also have to be passed in the Assembly in this regard, it said.
