Two sacks with torn and damaged currency notes of old Rs 500 and Rs 1000 stacked in them were recovered from a garbage vat in the southern part of the city's Golf Green area this morning.
Police said local people spotted the sacks in the vat on Golf Club Road in Jadavpur police station limits.
Policemen recovered the sacks after being informed.
"We are examining these notes and trying to find out their origin. We are checking the CCTV footages in the surroundings," a police officer said.
Four occupants of the car coming from Malda were arrested, district police said.
They were released on bail by a Raiganj court today.
