NRC in Assam figures in West Bengal assembly

The release of final draft of the NRC in Assam today figured in the West Bengal assembly, with opposition Congress and Left Front demanding a discussion on the matter and adoption of a unanimous proposal condemning it.

Leader of opposition Abdul Mannan and Left Front legislature party leader Sujan Chakraborty demanded that a motion be brought in the assembly to discuss the issue.

"We want a discussion to be held in the assembly on the issue of NRC. The BJP is trying to divide the country. The basic ideology and ethos are against the culture of Bengal and Bengalis. We want a resolution to be brought in by the government and we want to discuss it in the floor of the house and want to register our protest," Mannan said.

"We have requested the government that this resolution should be an all-party resolution. We would be happy if the government accepts it," he said.

Echoing Mannan, Chakraborty said, "We hope the ruling party would accept our views."
